Name of Co-op or Project

Community Grocery Cooperative

Description

The Community Grocery Cooperative is committed to using the cooperative principles and values as a tool to organize a consumer-owned grocery store that will be affordable, sustainable, equitable, reliable and provide residents with local healthy food. As we build toward our end goal of a location for opening a brick and mortar store, we also envision the development of the co-op to be a gateway for more economic opportunities and leadership empowerment for residents of Ward 7 and Ward 8.

Community Grocery Co-op’s work is designed to benefit these communities overall, but especially individuals who are located farther from a grocery store/supermarket (>.5 - 1 mile), have low rates of transportation access, and high rates of poverty. This may include youth, elderly, and others who don’t have the flexibility to shop in other wards. Our goal for CGC is to be a *right now* neighborhood asset that is readily accessible whenever needed, especially during challenge times.

Reason for fundraising?

We are planning to execute a pilot pop-up grocery store to be in select locations in Wards 7 and 8 this summer to a) test and evaluate ideal locations, products and features for a brick-and-mortar store, b) demonstrate to residents that a co-op model can be viable for the community and increase access to healthy, locally sourced food, and c) build momentum and anticipation for a permanent location. Funds will also help with marketing/advertising, outreach efforts and conducting a market study.
